Spend Valentine’s Day With An Honorable Woman

This Valentine’s Day Justice Sonia Sotomayor will be in the Coolidge Auditorium of the Library of Congress. Tickets are FREE and available now!

I 💝Honorable Sonia Sotomayor! I love her as a justice, as an author and as an honorable woman of Latina descent. I would love to spend Valentine’s Day listening to her lecture. That is not possible for me; however, if you can make it to the Library of Congress for February 14, 2019 – click here to get your free tickets.

LOVED BY MANY
Justice Sotomayor was accepted to Harvard, Yale AND Princeton. Choices, choices, choices. Before even turning 40, she became the first female of Latina descent to become a federal judge in New York state when appointed by President George H.W. BushPresident Bill Clinton later appointed her to the Circuit Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Then when she was appointed to the US Supreme Court by President Barack Obama, she was confirmed by a super majority.

Since breaking all that glass, Honorable Sonia Sotomayor has done an exemplary job being seen. This has made me love her so much more!! Justice Sotomayor knows how important it is for our future generations to see her in such a position as a supreme court justice. As she grew up she rarely saw a role model that she could identify with.

NO ROLE MODELS AND I’M HERE RIGHT NOW

So all of the Sesame Street appearances and all of her community events, such as this one, go a long way to break assumed constraints that so many people, young and old, are still bound by. Our own first woman of Puerto Rican descent at the US Supreme Court had to grow up with alcoholism in her home and had parents who didn’t speak English well. And eventually her father passed away and the justice actually grew up in a single parent home.

She has received criticism for using the term “wise Latina,” which I think is ridiculous. Especially considering that she is just that. In her books she stresses the importance of defining success and encourages us to stop putting unreasonable expectations on ourselves.

Utah v. Edward Joseph Strieff, Jr. Dissent

Not to mention her commitment to protecting our civil liberties with all the integrity and eloquence that we need her to have.

We must not pretend that the countless people who are routinely targeted by police are “isolated.” They are the canaries in the coal mine whose deaths, civil and literal, warn us that no one can breathe in this atmosphere. They are the ones who recognize that unlawful police stops corrode all our civil liberties and threaten all our lives. Until their voices matter too, our justice system will continue to be anything but.” Honorable Sonia Sotomayor decision on the matter.

So if your sweetheart loves this honorable Latina as much as I do, consider skipping tickets to a fancy restaurant and take a road trip to Washington, DC’s Library of Congress. Click here to learn more. Or if you are really feeling the Paralegal Power Blog and you want to hear what Hilarie Bass, as ABA President, said about a person’s freedom to disagree with judicial rulings check out our “Separation of Power” blog post.
