IS CREDIT REPAIR LEGAL?
Yes, credit repair is legal. Our Consumer Rights Paralegals will help you hold the credit reporting agencies accountable to the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) laws and other consumer laws that protect you.
The FCRA gives you the right to dispute any item on your credit report. If that item cannot be verified or updated within a reasonable time, it must be removed.
Studies have shown that almost 80% of all credit reports contain errors. The Federal Trade Commission’s Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions report to congress found that more than 20% of those errors are “material” errors that are making consumers appear to be a greater credit risk than they are. This is a nice way of saying that these errors that the creditors and credit reporting agencies know are there and are doing nothing about, are really screwing consumers over.
Subsequently costing consumers more money in higher interest rates and in some cases costing them the chance at the American dream of homeownership, or even just buying a car.
When you start researching how to increase your credit score, it can easily become a confusing jumbled mess of misinformation. The credit card and collection companies spend a lot of money to contribute to the confusion. And all of the confusion keeps consumers from exercising their rights in repairing their credit.
Most of the prominent information about credit repair has been put out there by credit card companies and big collection agencies who do not want you to know the truth. (This is just one reason why net neutrality is SO important, but that’s another blog.) Nonetheless, the truth is that you have rights. The truth is there is an astounding number of errors on credit reports. The truth is credit repair is legal.
The media went crazy when we finally found out the truth about Experian’s massive breach of information that affected so many consumers. Consumers went crazy. We were all upset and felt betrayed.
Yet we have been being betrayed by Experian, and all of the credit reporting agencies, this entire time while they stand by and do nothing about the constant misinformation knowing how it greatly affects the quality of lives of the consumers. The National Consumer Law Center will tell you, “Credit bureaus have little economic incentive to conduct proper disputes or improve their investigations.”
