A person would have to be absolutely disassociated from the community in which these human beings, these living souls, these children of God are dying to be able to confidently and publicly make such a comment.

A person would have to believe that they are somehow superior in comparison to the community that bleeds and suffers so much trauma every day for such a callous remark to be made. That belief of superiority would have to then be reinforced by his superiors, his friends, his family and of course – his laws.

I would have loved to see his response to being more about his accountability. By all means, inform the public of the downward trend but instead of comparing Omaha to Chicago, compare it to a place that offers the good life for ALL people.

Our human need to conform has led to most Omahans contributing to the racial inequity either with their silence or actions.

After the lynching of Willie Brown, a grand jury investigation was done yet not one person was charged with a crime, even those who were identified by the mayor himself as assailants. To add insult to injury, economic conditions, political unrest, among other reasons were listed as the cause of the lynching. Race or racism was never cited as a reason.

Here we are 100 years later, and still, Omaha refuses to address the root of all of its biggest problems – racism.

Please do not let this go on any longer. Before you know it, 100 more years will have passed and the rest of the world will have long acknowledged the fact that race was just something made up by society to satisfy our need to categorize and prejudge people, places and things around us.

I have been feeling compelled to do something about this. Something more than writing a blog. I hope you feel compelled as well.

If you do, join me at www.WillieBrownMemorial.com and let’s plan to organize to bring to light the truth of white supremacy and dismantle the myth of race altogether.
