Yoga Posing Paralegal

I could have also titled this blog, “How to Deal with ApPosing Counsel” or “Yoga Naw Love Me For This” or “Locustudy Arrangement.” Ok, I will stop trying to be punny and get to the blog. 

To survive in the legal field you have to be able to put your health first. We are told this means a lot of things but really it means handling stress. Any legal professional who cares about this profession is going to endure more than their fair share of stress.

This is why you see disproportionate amounts of alcohol abuse and health problems in this professionIn our blog post series “Paralegal Power Food,” I tell you how I left one job to deal with my stress-related auto-immune disorder and was replaced by a paralegal with the same disorder.

That illness took me through the wringer and had me on oral steroids for over two years resulting in my weight literally doubling. The number one question I get asked is how I lost so much weight. The quick answer is by dealing with the stress that legal professionals consequently suffer from when trying to solve other people’s legal problems. 

Stress Affects Our Immune Systems

I literally lost over 100 pounds when I finally figured it out. I was not exaggerating earlier when I told you I was on oral steroids for over two years. I was the definition of moon face. Not to mention irritable and constantly hungry.

While I was on steroids I had tons of energy. I was always on the go. I thought putting in an hour at the gym five days a week would help me lose weight and get back into shape

Once I was off of steroids, I expected to finally see results. I was pushing myself harder than ever and not only was my weight continuing to increase but I was developing weird bulky muscles and the weight around my stomach was not budging.

Traditional Methods of Losing Weight Made It Worse

For at least a couple of years, I am certain I ate nothing but sawdust. I clocked more than the recommended cardio at the gym, which meant hours away from my family and work. I gave it my all on the treadmill to hardcore rap and legal podcasts. Only for my body to still be a pudgy version of who I used to be. 😒

I Decided to Fall Back On My Personality

At that moment I became very grateful for having a personality. For always giving greater importance to inner beauty, because I was just going to concede to my chubbiness and let my inner beauty shine. I quit going to the gym and NEVER went back again. 

Instead of working out to look good, I just focused on what I could do to counter the inevitable stress that was fueling my autoimmune disorder. I went back to the basics and just started doing yoga at my desk from my computer.

I also met with not one but two different nurse practitioners I felt I could trust. But I did it and I hope everyone suffering can feel my same relief. Just make sure you do so with as much trusted medical advice as you can access.

I Stopped Exercising & Started Yoga 

So my effort to be healthy and pause and focus on aligning chakras and ingesting food is the truth as to how I lost all the weight. I am not exaggerating one iota. I share this with you because I know your health is affected by this profession.

I Conceded to Being Heavy – I Just Wanted to Relieve Stress

Before I went back to yoga, I had conceded to being a large person. I just wanted to do something to counter my stressful occupation. However, I never thought I would end up losing all the weight and getting the toned body I wanted. Especially my jawline and my waist. Which were not the results I was getting in the gym. 

I firmly believe that the cardio I was doing was adding stress to my body and my body gains weight when it is under stress. Yoga does the complete opposite and addresses the stress that is physically affecting my health.
